Whitewater adventures & more on the Salmon River in Idaho
Our home is on the Salmon River in Riggins. It is Idaho's whitewater mecca and deep canyon gateway to adventure filled getaways. Since 1981 we have been offering daily summer whitewater trips, spring salmon and steelhead fishing, and fall steelhead and chukar hunts.
Multi-day adventures are also offered and our five and six day trips are our favorites. More time in nature, the better. It normally takes people about three days just to decompress, relax, and then get acclimated to the river routine. So, all amount of time beyond that magical number of three is magnified exponentially in terms of how much more pleasure is surprisingly gained.
Drift boat fishing is our specialty. Enjoy padded seats with back rests, and an umbrella and heater if conditions get harsh. Standard drift fishing gear and lunch are provided on day trips. Fly fishing gear is not provided, but may be brought by guests.
We accommodate 2-3 people per boat. 1-6 day trips are available. In the fall these can be combined with chukar hunting. Our custom trips are why people like Cecil Andrus fish with us.
We take you and your dog, if desired, in a drift boat into the middle of chukar heaven. Our dogs hunt chukars all season and that is the only bird they hunt. They are serious, well-read, and primed for finding, pointing, and retrieving birds. It is their favorite thing to do, and watching them is one of ours. Rest assured that we will be as serious about chukar hunting as you like here at Wapiti and will go as hard (or not) as you wish in pursuing birds.
What better place to let your spirit run free than in the unencumbered natural flow of Idaho's Salmon River? Much of the river deeply dices the landscape into spectacular displays of geologic wonder as expressed by the calligraphy of nature's language written on walls of a canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon.
We run several sections of the lower 100 miles of river, varying from 1/2- to 6-day adventures. This allows several options, from mild to wild rapids.
Riggins: The sections above and below Riggins offer the most rapids mile-for-mile. The wildly popular half- and full-day trips make this an affordable way to get some exciting whitewater for families, groups or drop-in travelers.
Lower Gorge Below White Bird: Three- to six-day whitewater journeys are food for the soul as you travel through majestic canyons and camp on legendary big white sandy beaches as the Salmon River makes its way to the confluence with the Snake River at the bottom of Hells Canyon. The rich geographic landscapes, swimming beaches, delicious meals, and mosquito-free camps are just a few of the highlights of this captivating trip.
