Gary, that trip was one of the best trips of my life. A big part of that was your personality and knowledge of the area and fishing. I'll be back.

Hi Gary & Barb,
Just wanted to say "Thank you" for the awesome guided fishing trip on the Salmon River.  Gary, you are an expert oarsman and knew all the perfect spots for fishing.  We truly enjoyed our day and hope to come back again someday.

My husband and I went on our first 5 day river trip with Gary and Barb last week.  I say first, because we will most definitely be doing it again!  We chose the Owyhee river trip to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary, and it was meant to be.  Water conditions ended up being perfect after a week of uncertainty.

When Gary & Barb told us it was like a mini Grand Canyon, let me tell you, they are not exaggerating. It was the most beautiful 5 days I've ever known.

From the eagles, vultures, hawks, red winged black birds and relaxing hot springs to the exciting rapids, thunderstorm and sleeping in a cave, for me, it was a total week of relaxation AND excitement combined.  Gary & Barb are a complete pleasure to be with, their knowledge, wisdom and integrity are something I treasure in them as personal friends and river guides.

I wanted for nothing the entire week (except for it to last longer). The meals they prepared together were delicious, nutritious and filling.

These canyons, wildlife, rapids, sandy beaches, petroglyphs, natural hot springs, WAY COOL rock and other treasures are something everyone really must experience!! Life is too short, raft the Owyhee with Wapiti!

Gary & Barb,

We just rafted with you! You may not remember me, (yes we do) but we just had a family reunion there in McCall and came down for a "late 1/2 day trip" on Friday. I had to write you and express some feelings and thoughts I had because as a teacher, I know how much they can mean when you put so much passion into something you love so much. You did not know this, but I am a Head Track and Field coach at our local high school here. It is what I love and it is my PASSION. I love kids and I love the sport. I have always had a quiet reverence for mother nature and her forces, especially those found in the waters such as the oceans and rivers. In 2001, one of my track kids (a senior and team captain), drown in the ocean after being struck by a "sneaker wave" on the Oregon Coast. This occurred at a place that I take my entire team every year for bonding, goal setting and playful activity (yet do not allow them in the waters). You can imagine the heavy responsibility I felt when I learned of the death of this boy, when I learned of the location it occurred! Since then, my fear and ever anger at the "big waters" and the power therein have haunted me...knowing that at any moment, they can "attack". It's been awhile since I've taken the courage to attempt such things as running a river or playing in the waves of an ocean. It has spooked me beyond the point of healthiness. So, as you sensed a bit of fear in my sarcasm, it was real. I so much appreciated the professionalism, yet fun atmosphere of Gary and Bob (because I'm a jokester myself!) I was very comforted to know that they run that river every day and know it inside and out as well that they know rescue techniques, etc. I felt from the get go, that I was in good hands and that is PRICELESS! I would recommend you all to ANYONE that I know is coming your way. There are not enough businesses around like you. And because of that trip, I know have my much more loving reverence back for the waters rather than an angry fear. I told! my husband that I DO INDEED plan to take an extended trip with YOU and No one else sometime in the future for our anniversary (will be 18 years on the 21st of August! :) I have NO DESIRE to travel to other countries to see things in their land when there are such beautiful and wondrous sights right here in our back yard! And that's how I want to do it! I'VE FOUND IT, I exclaimed to my husband...how I want to travel...by boat! (we are water skiers, but can't travel very far :) Anyhow, a long winded way of saying thank you for giving me back a love of the powerful waters, why still modeling the love and reverence that it deserves! You all are WONDERFUL!!!! (and for taking care of my boy, who I was very nervous about...as you now know why. YOU ROCK! :)

Dear Wapiti:

Thanks for the news.

I wanted you to know that I heard wonderful things about one of your day trips this past summer… One of my colleagues at the U of Idaho, Jack Sullivan, chose Gary to take his little kids, Connor (about five years old) and Terra (two or three), for their first raft trip on the Riggins stretch.

Of course, this was a perfect choice. Gary’s consummate skill and kindness ensured that the kids were both safe and had the time of their lives. Jack himself told me that it was one of the most memorable experiences he had had to date as a dad.

Good job.

Best regards—

…Really though, the trip was fantastic and completely out of the girl's and my comfort zone and we still loved it.  Thank you so much for such a wonderful way to end the summer and I really do hope we meet again.

Sincerely,

Kim and I want to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for a memorable day on the Salmon River.  Though we didn't catch any Steelhead, we captured time - something that always seems to escape us here in the city.  The river is awesome, and Kim truly enjoyed an opportunity to relax on the river knowing our "ship" was in the hands of a very skilled oarsman!  We both enjoyed the moments of pure peace and quiet, and the sharing of laughter.

Have a wonderful day, and again, Thank You.                                        Kim and Dyana - Boise, ID

Ya'at'eeh Gary,

Pardon my bad Navajo but I wanted to thank you for a great week on the Salmon!  It was the best!  Nizho'migo' nanina' (Walk in beauty!)

Thanks so much for your hospitality during our visit. It was great to see both of you! The entertainment there is amazing – the raft trip, the wildlife, and Corn Cob Bob! I really had a great time, your place is great. Not too many places where you can sleep under the stars and listen to the river.

Thanks again,

I so enjoyed meeting & talking with both of you. You are special people! Thank you so much for your generosity in taking me floating down the Salmon (which was my favorite river while I was on it!) I look forward to seeing you again on my next trip out to beautiful Idaho.

Fondly,

The Center will provide the public with the rare opportunity to observe and learn more about the wolf in its natural habitat. It is our goal to be an inclusive organization that offers factual and balanced information. We seek to enhance public awareness of threatened species in the region and to develop in concert with residents ways to coexist with these species.
