Chukar Hunts

Calling all hunting dogs. It is time to get your master excited for chukar hunting the steep slopes of the Salmon River country.  Do you want to hunt world class terrain, but not leave your trusted gunner behind?  Make sure you whip your trainer into shape for the demanding hunts you desire and deserve.

As a dog, you know how hard it will be for your aging master to get up the slopes where you go.  
Chukar partridge may be one of the most challenging upland game birds to hunt on the planet. They like steep country, run uphill, and fly back down faster than a speeding blaze of pellets.  You hunters may be great gunners in the easy conditions, but what about when side-hilling across forty-degree slopes as birds whiz by your side at 60 mph?

This is why your dog is welcome to travel in the boat and on the slopes with us, to make life easier for you.   Working those yoyo retrieves up and down the mountain, is man’s best four legged savior. Thank you for that.  Of course, we have a dog to help those who don't. 

It takes a certain obsession to be an avid chukar hunter. We have it here at Wapitiland, in a serious way. So what we like most is when we find like minded folks we can relate to while panting our way skyward.  Misery loves company.

The really wonderful thing about chasing chukars is the outrageous views we get while hunting. Elevations far above the river make one feel they may have just set one foot into heaven. Granted, it is a paradise arrived at the hard way.

But, if chukar hunting is better than this somewhere else, I would like to know where.

Combo trips with Steelhead fishing

Of course, many guys soon find out that after a huge hike up the  chukar hill, steelhead fishing starts to look pretty darn good.  Heck, why not sit back and watch your rod, waiting all the while for a chukar to come to the river for water. We sometimes get lucky, and get hunters into shooting birds (legally) right from our boats. Of course, this is normally early in the season when dry weather forces birds to the water level everyday. Until first rain, then expect to head for nosebleed elevations. Or wait until later when snow arrives and birds are pushed back down again.

This is a hard combination to beat for those of you sportsmen seriously obsessed with chukar- mania and steelheaditis.  We have all the rods and equipment for most steelhead fishing. But you will have to bring a fly rod if you are a fly fishermen and your own gun, shells, and hunting gear if you want to pursue birds. Not to worry if you don’t have a dog. We do. 

Note: we are serious about chukar hunting here at Wapitiland, so you have arrived at the right place if you want to hunt hard and work with your dog.  We will go as hard (or not) as you wish to find birds. But, it is important to be in good physical shape. This is a demanding canyon to climb after birds in and isn’t for everyone.
